ESL Instructor/ Multiple positions  

GENERAL POSITION SUMMARY:  

Provides ESL classroom instruction to adult language learners with a focus on work readiness. Collaborates with instructors and curriculum specialists to prepare lessons and materials, deliver content that centers adult participants’ needs, meet learning outcome targets, and align with best practices in the ESL field. Courses are offered for 6 proficiency levels and include literacy and numeracy, everyday “survival” English, grammar, conversation, reading, writing, listening, culturally relevant work readiness and employability, and computer skills content. The instructor will join the Pre-Employment Training team of instructors as part of IRCO’s Refugee Employment Services programming within the Workforce and Refugee Services Division in collaboration with other IRCO divisions. 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:  

• Provide in-person and/or remote ESL classroom instruction. 
• Responsible for delivering and revising curricula. 
• Utilize curricula to deliver lessons incorporating culturally appropriate content and language to prepare participants for the workforce. 
• Adjust the classroom setting and lessons for a variety of learning styles and abilities. 

JOB SPECIFIC QUALIFICATIONS: 

• Classroom teaching experience required, or combination of relevant training and/or facilitating skills and experience. 
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills. 
• Understand the unique needs of adult learners in refugee and immigrant communities. 
• Ability to respect and maintain confidentiality of information and privacy of participants. 
• Able to communicate effectively with learners at a variety of skill levels.  

REQUIREMENTS:         

• Education: ESL certification preferred (TEFL, CELTA, or equivalent); bachelor’s degree required; master’s degree preferred. 
• Degree in language acquisition, education, linguistics, or related field preferred; similar degree or equivalent experience will be considered. 
• Experience: 1-2 years of experience minimum. 
• Knowledge of adult education and ESL/TESOL pedagogy required; familiarity with case management and refugee resettlement or other frontline social services preferred. 
• Proficiency in using computers, email, and virtual platforms such as Zoom required; experience using web-based collaboration platforms such as MS SharePoint preferred.

• Ability to function in a positive manner in a demanding work environment, to demonstrate a high degree of flexibility, to respond to priorities and schedules that change frequently. 
• Ability to deal with distressed and/or demanding clients/students in an effective manner. 
• Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality. 
• Strong skills in intercultural, interpersonal, and organizational communication 
• Ability to communicate in a positive manner verbally, in writing, and by phone.
